Toxicological Highlight

Curtis D. Klaassen, Editor and David A. Lawrence, Forum Associate Editor

With this issue of Toxicological Sciences we introduce a new feature: "Toxicological Highlight." In each future issue of the journal, an article will be selected for highlighting. Choosing an article to be highlighted is difficult because many interesting and diverse topics appear in each issue. The selection is not meant to suggest that one group's science is better than another's. The selection of a single article per issue is based on numerous factors, such as a topic that is of general interest; highlighting the paper can place the results in context with concerns often beyond the scope of the article itself. For example, in highlighting our first selected paper, "Oil fly ash-induced elevation of plasma fibrinogen levels in rats" by Gardner et al., Drs. Terry Gordon and Joan Reibman discuss the relationships between inhaled particles and cardiovascular problems, and comment on the paper. Of course, highlighting a single article does emphasize the work of the particular group and will make other toxicologists more aware of their studies. Hopefully, the notoriety will be welcomed, but to ensure that an article can be highlighted and the authors can withstand the accompanying glory or pain, the senior author is contacted for permission.

The writers of the "Toxicological Highlight" commentary will be solicited from the appropriate specialty sections of the Society, the Society's media recourse specialists, or well-recognized experts on a particular topic. The intent of the commentary is to expand the relevance of the article for the multidisciplinary audience of toxicologists, without over-interpreting the data. Toxicological Sciences reflects the varied interests of toxicologists, and the new section should help to promote improved understanding of the meaningfulness of our multifaceted discipline.
