International Society for Hemodialysis

The International Society for Hemodialysis (ISHD), patterned after the International Society for Peritoneal Dialysis (ISPD), has recently been formed to foster haemodialysis-related educational, research and patient-care activities. The society will have its own scientific journal and educational web-site.

11th International Congress on Nutrition and Metabolism in Renal Disease 29–31 March 2002, Nagoya, Japan

The International Society of Renal Nutrition and Metabolism in Renal Disease was established to bring scientists and dietitians together in order to explore the special requirements of patients with kidney disease. The 11th congress in Nagoya will provide up-to-date information about major advances in nutrition and metabolism and how these advances influence the care of kidney patients. The scientific program will include plenary lectures, symposia, free communications, and poster discussions as well as a special program for renal dietitians. 5th International Congress on Mechanisms of Uraemic Toxicity 13–16 September 2002, Wuerzburg, Germany

The meeting focuses on the impact of uraemia on the cardiovascular system. Deadline for abstract submission will be April 22, 2002. Topics will focus on: (1) Traditional uraemic toxins and atherosclerosis, (2) the immune system in uraemia, (3) AGEs, (4) carbonyl stress and oxidative modification, (5) homocysteine and coagulation, (6) inflammation, (7) endothelial dysfunction and blood pressure regulation, (8) hyperphosphatemia and PTH, (9) dyslipidaemia and metabolic disorders, (10) pharmacotherapy and functional nutrition, (11) new candidate genes for end-organ damage, (12) epidemiology and clinical trials, and (13) impact of dialysis therapy on uraemic toxins.

Commission for the History of Nephrology Funding Opportunities

Student scholarships
Four scholarships of $500 each are available for competition by students wishing to embark upon short studies on the history of nephrology. Applications should include the name of supervisor and a brief description of the project.

MSc in the History of Nephrology
The Wellcome Institute for the History of Medicine offers a one year MSc course and would consider favourably applications from students and members of the ISN.

MD degree in History of Nephrology for UK medical graduates
The Wellcome Institute for the History of Medicine has a support scheme for medically qualified individuals who wish to obtain a higher degree in the History of Medicine. This is usually a two year period of study culminating in the submission of a thesis. Appropriate supervisors would be suggested.

PhD studentships in the History of Nephrology
The Wellcome Institute for the History of Medicine would look favourably upon suitable candidates who wish to apply for 3 years of funding to support studies towards a PhD.
