 Introduction

Upon invitation by the Romanian Society of Nephrology, the Joint Action Nephrology in Eastern Europe combining the efforts of the International Society of Nephrology (COMGAN) and the European Renal Association (ERA/EDTA) organized a 1-day course on clinical nephrology on the premises of the monastery in Durau in the Eastern Carpathian mountains. The meeting was preceded by a 1-day meeting on peritoneal dialysis organized by Fresenius Medical Care, which also provided invaluable and gratefully acknowledged logistic help for the subsequent international educational course.

The programme was worked out jointly by Professor Dr Maria Covic (Iasi), A. Fournier (Amiens), and E. Ritz (Heidelberg). The faculty comprised Professors Fournier (Amiens), Goldsmith (London), Ritz (Heidelberg), Pusey (London), and Sacks (London).

The topics covered a wide spectrum concerning secondary hyperparathyroidism, blood pressure control, diabetic nephropathy, vasculitis, primary glomerulonephritis, transplant immunology, and medical management of the transplanted patient, as well as the microinflammatory state in renal failure. This event followed the very successful educational course in Bucharest, 30 October 1999 (Nephrol Dial Transplant 2000; 15: 278).

The meeting was attended by 220 clinical nephrologists and a total audience of 300 physicians from all over Romania and the Republic of Moldavia. There was very animated interaction between the audience and the faculty. The discussion gave testimony to the high levels of knowledge of the Romanian nephrologists. Both the speakers and the audience undoubtedly benefited from the opportunity to interact.

The meeting took place in the scenic and beautiful Ceahlau Mountains in a remote mountainous environment, which provided a wonderful background for the conference.

In view of the enthusiastic welcome provided by our Romanian colleagues, the conference will certainly be followed by similar events in the future.
