Extracellular Matrix (ECM) 2000 1–4 June 2000, Göttingen, Germany

This symposium will bring together nephrologists and basic scientists working in the field of fibrogenesis. The meeting will consist of invited contributions and selected free communications. Topics will address wound healing and fibrinogenesis, extracellular matrix and the kidney, fibroblasts and their origin, cytokines and chemokines in renal fibrogenesis, extracellular matrix in diabetes mellitus, role of non-fibroblasts in fibrogenesis, novel aspects in kidney fibrosis, mechanisms of matrix degradation and new therapeutic aspects. Deadline for abstract submission is 15 April 2000. Attendance is limited to 120.

Renal Transplantation, Clinical Therapy and Molecular Mechanisms 2–3 June 2000, Frankfurt/Main, Germany

The main objective of this 2-day symposium is to review recent advances in the clinical management of renal transplant recipients and to present new concepts of the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying acute and chronic allograft failure, tolerance induction and further aspects of transplantation biology. The symposium includes invited lectures, plenary discussions and the opportunity to ‘meet the experts’, as well as poster presentations.

5th Baltic Nephrology Conference 30 June–2 July, 2000, Tallinn, Estonia

The three Baltic Societies of Nephrology, i.e. Estonian, Latvian and Lithuanian Society, in collaboration with the Joint Action Nephrology in eastern Europe, sponsored by ISN and ERA–EDTA, have organized a 3-day meeting in the city of Tallinn, Estonia from 30 June–2 July 2000.

The meeting will start with a renal histopathology conference, organized by Jan Weening (Amsterdam) and will be followed by a CPC conference. Main topics to be discussed by experts in the field include: progression of renal failure—from basic mechanisms to clinical management; sympathetic nerve activity and hypertension in renal disease; blood pressure on dialysis; hypertension after renal transplantation; and discussion of ACE inhibitors versus angiotensin receptor blockers in renal disease, as well as the calcium channel blocker controversy. Further themes of the conference include renal involvement in rheumatic disease, advances in immunosuppression after renal transplantation and malignancy after renal transplantation.

10th International Congress on Nutrition and Metabolism in Renal Disease 6–8 July 2000, Lyon, France

The International Society of Renal Nutrition and Metabolism was established to bring scientists together in order to explore the special requirements of patients with kidney disease. This has been the primary function of our biennial Congress which has grown in the degree of scientific sophistication but also maintains a focus on the problems of patients.

The 10th Congress in Lyon will continue this tradition of providing up-to-date information about major advances in nutrition and metabolism and how these advances influence the care of kidney patients.

The scientific programme will include the following topics: Diabetes and renal disease; Dialysis and nutrition; Nutritional control of blood pressure; New insights in phosphate and vitamin D metabolism; Proteinuria and progression of chronic renal disease, and Protein metabolism.

The meeting will consist of plenary lectures, symposia, workshops, free communications and poster discussions as well as a special programme for renal dieticians and a large scientific exhibition.

8th European Meeting on Cardionephrology (Jubilee Meeting) 16–18 November 2000, Assisi, Italy

The main purpose of the meeting will be improving pathophysiological, clinic and therapeutic knowledge in the major areas of cardionephrology devoted to the practising nephrologist, cardiologist and hypertensiologist.

Commission for the History of Nephrology Funding Opportunities

Student scholarships

Four scholarships of $500 each are available for competition by students wishing to embark upon short studies on the history of nephrology. Applications should include the name of supervisor and a brief description of the project.

MSc in the History of Nephrology

The Wellcome Institute for the History of Medicine offers a one year MSc course and would consider favourably applications from students and members of the ISN.

MD degree in History of Nephrology for UK medical graduates

The Wellcome Institute for the History of Medicine has a support scheme for medically qualified individuals who wish to obtain a higher degree in the History of Medicine. This is usually a two year period of study culminating in the submission of a thesis. Appropriate supervisors would be suggested.

PhD studentships in the History of Nephrology

The Wellcome Institute for the History of Medicine would look favourably upon suitable candidates who wish to apply for 3 years of funding to support studies towards a PhD.
