To the birthday of Giuseppe D'Amico

Personally I do not believe that it is correct to remind someone of his birthday anniversary when he is older than 60, for two reasons: (a) you remind him that he is approaching retirement; (b) you remind him that in a few years he will no longer be an active part of the society. For these reasons it would be better to classify people into two groups: (i) young and (ii) less young, and to divide the latter into two sub-groups: (a) people who live awaiting retirement and (b) very active people who continue to stimulate the society with their indefatigable presence.

Well, Giuseppe D'Amico who celebrated his 70th birthday recently is a very active person who can be included in the sub-group iib for three reasons:

  1. He founded the San Carlo Course which stimulated Italian nephrologists to work hard, and during the last 30 years he has been responsible for the improvement of scientific activity in Italy. The presence of outstanding speakers and the quality of information transmitted, make the round table discussions in San Carlo very fascinating.
  2. He has great `charisma', several times convincing the audience that his rationale was correct.
  3. He continues to be a point of reference for the nephrology community as reflected by the fact that he is asked to talk at many important meetings.

Why this feeling between G. D'Amico and other nephrologists in the world? He is a very distinguished scientist and a good teacher for nephrologists who wish to clear their ideas in nephrology.

It is a great honour for me to remind the Europeans and members outside Europe that G. D'Amico at the age of 70 continues to be a light to follow for young and less young nephrologists.
