Kuratorium der Gesellschaft für Nephrologie. Scholarships for Training in Clinical Nephrology for Junior Nephrologists from Eastern Europe

The Kuratorium der Gesellschaft für Nephrologie is prepared to support for the year 2001 and 2002 a total of 12 scholarships for junior nephrologists (<40 years of age) from eastern Europe. The purpose of such scholarships is to provide training for up to 6 weeks in basic or applied nephrology in leading departments in Germany, Switzerland and Austria. Support for travel and accommodation expenses of up to DM 2.500 will be provided.

The application (max. 3 pages) should include: curriculum vitae; description of main clinical and scientific activities, fields of major interest for training (clinical nephrology, hypertension, uraemic bone disease, immunotherapy, haemo/peritoneal dialysis, transplantation). Knowledge of English or German language is a prerequisite.

Eighth International Conference on Continuous Renal Replacement Therapies (CRRT) 6–8 March 2003, Hotel del Coronado, San Diego, CA

A unique international symposium featuring a forum for multi-disciplinary interactions between physicians, nurses, support personnel and industry involved in the care of the critically ill patient. Continuing the trend established with the previous conferences, this one has an exciting and up-to-date program planned covering the latest developments and research in the field of ICU medicine and CRRT. The conference is structured to promote multi-disciplinary inter-action among specialists in nephrology, critical care, nursing, support personnel and industry involved in the care of the critically ill patient. A combination of invited lectures, panel discussions, interactive workshops, oral and poster presentations will be utilized with CME credits. Major topics to be addressed include: evolving concepts in the pathophysiology and management of the critically ill patient; practice for CRRT and standardization of care; renal replacement and renal support; experience and controversies with CRRT.

The III Course of Genetics and Renal Diseases 3–5 June 2004, Genoa, Italy

Dialysis Academy: Non-dialytic and dialytic management of end-stage renal disease patients

The courses of the Dialysis Academy will be organized twice a year. The target audience are trainees in nephrology. The total number of participants is limited. They will be selected based on CV, by an international jury.

Registration and accommodation are free. Support for travel costs will be provided.

The ninth course will take place in Potsdam, 3–6 June, 2003.

International Society for Hemodialysis

The International Society for Hemodialysis (ISHD), patterned after the International Society for Peritoneal Dialysis (ISPD), has recently been formed to foster haemodialysis-related educational, research and patient-care activities. The society will have its own scientific journal and educational web-site.

Commission for the History of Nephrology Funding Opportunities

Student scholarships
Four scholarships of $500 each are available for competition by students wishing to embark upon short studies on the history of nephrology. Applications should include the name of supervisor and a brief description of the project.

MSc in the History of Nephrology
The Wellcome Institute for the History of Medicine offers a one year MSc course and would consider favourably applications from students and members of the ISN.

MD degree in History of Nephrology for UK medical graduates
The Wellcome Institute for the History of Medicine has a support scheme for medically qualified individuals who wish to obtain a higher degree in the History of Medicine. This is usually a two year period of study culminating in the submission of a thesis. Appropriate supervisors would be suggested.

PhD studentships in the History of Nephrology
The Wellcome Institute for the History of Medicine would look favourably upon suitable candidates who wish to apply for 3 years of funding to support studies towards a PhD.

Wyeth to Support Hesperis Annual Training Course

Pavillon Specialists at all levels in the field of transplantation are invited to apply for one of the 66 places at the Hesperis course for the 2002–2003 academic year, which will be supported by a grant from Wyeth Pharmaceuticals. This generous sponsorship will enable Hesperis—the European College of Transplantation—to continue to provide education at the highest level for specialists in transplantation. For the academic year 2002—2003, the course will take place as follows:

• Session 1, Cambridge: November 26 to December 1, 2002

• Session 2, Paris: May 20 to May 25, 2003

The College provides a great opportunity for transplant specialists to discuss research, exchange ideas and expand their knowledge. The course will include lectures, formal presentations and discussion sessions.
