Third Molecular Biology Workshop for the Clinical Nephrologist 2–6 October 2000, Budapest, Hungary

Following the highly successful Molecular Biology Workshops in Prague 1998 and Vilnius 1999 (NDT 1998; 10: 2701 and NDT 1999; 14: 2963) the Joint Action Nephrology in Eastern Europe (ISN, ERA, Kuratorium Gesellschaft Nephrologie) is pleased to announce the Third Molecular Biology Workshop on the premises of the Semmelweis University Medical School (Professor L. Rosivall, Institute of Pathophysiology), Budapest, Hungary. The course will again be organized by the team of Professor Martin Paul from the Universitätsklinikum Benjamin Franklin, Freie Universität, Berlin, Germany. The goal of the course is to train clinical nephrologists in molecular methods. In-depth seminars with a special emphasis on interaction between participants and faculty teachers will be complemented by intensive bench side work in the laboratory providing ‘hands on’ experience to all participants. A total of 12 participants will be selected from applications which should include a curriculum vitae with particular emphasis on personal interests and need for training in molecular methods. Participation in the Workshop is free of charge and expenses for travel and accommodation will be partially covered by the organizers.

8th European Meeting on Cardionephrology (Jubilee Meeting) 16–18 November 2000, Assisi, Italy

The main purpose of the meeting will be improving pathophysiological, clinic and therapeutic knowledge in the major areas of cardionephrology devoted to the practising nephrologist, cardiologist and hypertensiologist.

The scientific programme includes: State-of-the-art Lectures (Symposia), Clinical Sessions, Case and Poster Presentation, Communications and Industry Exhibitions.

>The 2nd International Congress on Immunointervention in Nephrology 24–26 May 2001, Chia Laguna, Italy

The 2nd International Congress on Immunointervention in Nephrology will be held 24–26 May 2001 in Chia Laguna (Cagliari, Sardinia, Italy). This meeting will deal with therapeutic strategies in kidney transplantation and glomerular diseases. The programme will include lectures from invited international speakers, round tables, sessions of poster and free communications. The aims of this meeting are to present an update of the emerging immunomodulating drugs and discuss the best immunosuppressive strategies in kidney transplantation and primary glomerulonephritis. Commission for the History of Nephrology Funding Opportunities

Student scholarships

Four scholarships of $500 each are available for competition by students wishing to embark upon short studies on the history of nephrology. Applications should include the name of supervisor and a brief description of the project.

MSc in the History of Nephrology

The Wellcome Institute for the History of Medicine offers a one year MSc course and would consider favourably applications from students and members of the ISN.

MD degree in History of Nephrology for UK medical graduates

The Wellcome Institute for the History of Medicine has a support scheme for medically qualified individuals who wish to obtain a higher degree in the History of Medicine. This is usually a two year period of study culminating in the submission of a thesis. Appropriate supervisors would be suggested.

PhD studentships in the History of Nephrology

The Wellcome Institute for the History of Medicine would look favourably upon suitable candidates who wish to apply for 3 years of funding to support studies towards a PhD.
