We would like to congratulate Professor Fr Kokot, Director of the Silesian School of Medicine, on the occasion of his 70th birthday, the 24th November 1999.
Professor Kokot is Chairman of the Central Qualifying Commission of the Polish Academy of Sciences, Member of the Polish Academy of Sciences, and was Council member of the European Renal Association from 1978 to 1981 and from 1987 to 1990. He is an honorary member of the Bulgarian, Czechoslovakian, German, Hungarian, Italian, Macedonian and Yugoslavian Societies of Nephrology. He is the recipient of several prestigious awards, including the Sniadecki Award of the Polish Academy of Sciences, the Louis Pasteur Medal of the University of Strasbourg, the Purkinje Medal of the Czechoslovakian Academy of Science, and the Franz Volhard Medal of the Gesellschaft für Nephrologie. His outstanding achievements have been rewarded with a Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh. He holds equally the title of Doctor honoris causa at five medical schools.
Professor Kokot was born in Olesno, Silcsia in 1929, and studied medicine at the Silesian School of Medicine, Katowice, where he also held his first posts, in the Departments of Pharmacology and Internal Medicine. He did additional postdoctoral training at the University of Geneva and at St Mary's Hospital in London. He was a visiting Professor in the United States. His career at the Silesian School of Medicine has been extremely distinguished: Assistant Professor in 1957, Associate Professor in 1962, Extraordinary Professor in 1969, Director of Nephrology in 1975, Ordinary Professor in 1982, Prorector in 1980, and Rector in 1982.
His main interest lies with endocrine disorders in acute and chronic renal failure and other conditions such as essential and renovascular hypertension, renal stone disease, and renal and cardiac transplantation. In the days of the Iron Curtain, he created an internationally renowned laboratory for hormonal measurements. Despite obviously adverse circumstances, he published several pieces of work on endocrinology in renal disorders which were recognized internationally for their exceptionally high quality. He is author and co-author of more than 350 original articles, 102 review articles and 60 chapters in medical publications. He has been a member of several international journals, including Nephrology Dialysis Transplantation.
It is an accepted fact that Professor Kokot is one of the most outstanding European clinical investigators in the field of Nephrology. On the occasion of his 70th birthday, the editorial board of Nephrology Dialysis Transplantation, together with his many friends and colleagues worldwide, wish to congratulate Professor Kokot on his many achievements, and voice the hope that he continues to share his wisdom with the scientific community for many years to come.
