Seventh Symposium of the Japan/France Nephrology Exchange Association, Brussels, Belgium, 11–12 June 2004

Necker Hospital, Paris, France

The symposium was organized, as the preceding symposia, by a scientific committee composed of Nobuhiro Sugino and Susumu Takahashi from Nihon University Medical School (Tokyo, Japan) and Jean-Pierre Grünfeld, Nguyen Khoa Man and Tilman Drüeke from Necker Hospital (Paris, France). It took place in the beautiful palace of the Royal Academy of Medicine of Belgium.

Five main topics in nephrology were covered at the symposium, extending from glomerular and interstitial renal diseases to pathophysiological and therapeutic aspects of chronic kidney disease.

The first topic was ‘Glomerular diseases’, with conferences on the plasmin/antiplasmin system (Eric Rondeau, Paris), megsin serpinopathy (Toshio Miyata, Kanagawa) and immunological mechanisms of glomerular disease (Kenichi Shikata, Okayama).

The second topic was ‘Tubulointerstitial diseases’, with conferences on mitochondrial cytopathies (Dominique Chauveau, Paris), aristolochic acid nephropathy (Jean-Pierre Cosyns, Brussels) and experimental evidence of and clinical perspectives on fibrosis regression (Jean-Claude Dussaule, Paris).

The third topic was ‘Pathophysiology of chronic renal failure’, with conferences on the treatment of secondary hyperparathyroidism by ethanol injection (Masafumi Fukagawa, Kobe), vascular calcification and chronic kidney disease (Yoshiki Nishizawa, Osaka) and the role of hypoxia in renal disease progression (Masaomi Nangaku, Tokyo).

The fourth topic was ‘Pathophysiology of renal replacement therapy’, with conferences on dialysis and free radicals (Tsutomu Sanaka, Tokyo), continuous haemodiafiltration (Raymond Vanholder, Gent), alterations of the peritoneal membrane in peritoneal dialysis patients (Olivier Devuyst, Brussels), peritoneal regeneration (Masanobu Miyazaki, Nagasaki) and non-haematological effects of epoetin (Danilo Fliser, Hannover).

The fifth topic was ‘Hepatitis C: implications and therapy’, with conferences on HCV and dialysis (Mitsuru Yanai, Tokyo) and the treatment of hepatitis C in dialysis and renal transplant patients (Lionel Rostaing, Toulouse).

The quality of all the speakers was remarkable, with many lively discussions and numerous exchanges between Japanese nephrologists and mostly French-speaking nephrologists from Europe. This made the meeting a great scientific success.

The scientific committee wishes to mention with deep sadness the untimely death of Mr Kazuhiko Kihara, former president of Hospal Japan, who was instrumental in the set-up and successful organization of all Japan/France Nephrology Exchange Association meetings, including the present one.

We acknowledge the generous financial and logistic support by Gambro Japan (Mr Takeshi Fujiwara, Tokyo).
