A novel evaluation method for paraffinized human renal biopsies using quantitative analysis of microdissected glomeruli and VCAM-1 as marker of inflammatory mesangial cell activation

Jochen W. U. Fries, Tanja Roth, Hans-Peter Dienes, Manfred Weber and Margarete Odenthal

Nephrol Dial Transplant 2003; 18: 710–716

The authors have been informed by Professor Groene, Deutsches Krebsforschungszentrum, Heidelberg, Germany, of a paper with him as co-author using similar technology and being published in Kidney Int 2002; 16: 125–132, which was regrettably not cited. Since this paper was published already in 2002, the co-author wants us to acknowledge that the phrasing "Our studies demonstrate for the first time" seems not appropriate. However, the novelty of the NDT publication lies in a faster and completely different extraction method as well as in the unexpected expression of VCAM-1 in proliferative diseases such as IgA nephropathy. In part, these results had been already presented in poster form at the Internal Medicine Meeting in Wiesbaden, Germany, in April 2001 (published in Med Klinik, April 2001).
