EDITOR'S NOTE: Re: Benefits and Risks of Screening Mammography for Women in Their Forties: a Statistical Appraisal

Ms. Napoli has correctly quoted Journal policy that all authors are specifically asked to disclose any financial arrangements that may raise the question of bias in the work presented, including direct and indirect arrangements that benefit their institutions or departments. Our purpose in soliciting such information is to allow readers to judge the opinions of authors and reported results of studies in the context of any potential conflicts of interest. Readers can then make their own judgement about the relevance of the authors' disclosures. Similar to most—if not all—biomedical journals, we rely on authors to reveal potential conflicts of interest fully. As is the case with other journals, we lack the resources—both monetary and human—to investigate the completeness and accuracy of the information provided.
