The David A. Karnofsky Award was given to Charles A. Coltman Jr., M.D., of the Cancer Therapy and Research Center of San Antonio. The award is given to an individual who is known for his or her clinical research and who has changed the way oncologists think about the general practice of oncology.
Heine H. Hansen, M.D., Ph.D., of the National University of Denmark, was presented with the Distinguished Service Award for Scientific Achievement. Hansen has been a leader in the European Society for Medical Oncology, the Early Clinical Trials Group of the European Organization for the Research and Treatment of Cancer, the Danish Society of Medical Oncology, and the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer.

Rep. Nancy L. Johnson (R-Conn.) was honored with the Public Service Award. For several years, Johnson was the lead sponsor of the Medicare Cancer Clinical Trials Coverage Act and was instrumental in implementing clinical trials coverage through last falls Medicare National Coverage Decision.
The American Cancer Society Award, which is financially supported by that society, was given to Sidney J. Winawer, M.D., of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, New York. Winawer is head of the World Health Organization Collaborating Center for the Prevention of Colorectal Cancer and the Chair of the National Colonoscopy Screening Trial Planning Committee.

The Young Investigator Awards were presented to physicians entering their final year of an oncology training program and intend to pursue investigative careers in clinical oncology. Each of the recipients received a 1-year grant of $35,000 to commence their investigative studies.

The Merit Award was given to more than 95 physicians in training to assist with their travel expenses to attend the ASCO annual meeting. Nadia Harbeck, M.D., Technical University in Munich, Germany, was selected to receive the ASCO Fellowship Merit Award for the highest-ranking abstract in the Merit Award category. The Brigid Levanthal Merit Award was given to Lars Wagner, M.D., St. Jude Childrens Hospital, for the highest-ranking abstract in pediatric oncology research. Jade Homsi, M.D., Cleveland Clinic Foundation, received the Pain Merit Award for the highest-ranking abstract in pain management.
