Major Milestones for Mifepristone

1980: Mifepristone synthesized.

1989: FDA bans the importation of mifepristone for personal use.

1990: Scientists testify before Congress that the FDA import ban has hindered research on the medical benefits of mifepristone, including as a treatment for breast cancer.

1993: President Clinton issues an executive order directing the Secretary of Health and Human Services to re-evaluate the mifepristone import ban.

1996: FDA issues an approvable letter for mifepristone, when used in combination with misoprostol, for early abortion.

2000: FDA approves mifepristone for use in combination with misoprostol as an early option for nonsurgical abortion.
