{blacksquare} Three new leaders have been appointed at the National Cancer Institute.

James H. Doroshow, M.D., has been appointed director of NCI’s Division of Cancer Treatment and Diagnosis. Doroshow was previously chair of the Department of Medical Oncology and Therapeutics Research and associate director for clinical research at the City of Hope Comprehensive Cancer Center, Los Angeles.

Karen Antman, M.D., has been named deputy director for Translational and Clinical Sciences in the Office of the Director. Antman was previously director of Columbia University’s Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center, New York, and chief of the Division of Medical Oncology.

Mark Clanton, M.D., was recently named the new deputy director for Cancer Care and Delivery Systems. Clanton is a former president-elect of the American Cancer Society and was chief medical officer of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas.

{blacksquare} Emil Frei III, M.D., has received the inaugural American Association for Cancer Research Award for Lifetime Achievement in Cancer Research. Frei is physician-in-chief emeritus of the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Susan Smith Distinguished Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. Frei, Emil Freireich, M.D., and James F. Holland, M.D., were the first to devise combination chemotherapy, which led to the first complete cure for childhood leukemia.

{blacksquare} Bernard A. Schwetz, D.V.M., Ph.D., has been appointed director of the Office for Human Research Protections (OHRP) at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. OHRP protects human subjects in research by monitoring more than 10,000 HHS-funded universities, hospitals, and research institutions in the United States and abroad.

Prior to his appointment as acting director of OHRP in February 2003, Schwetz was the senior adviser for science at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and a Distinguished Scientist at the University of Maryland, College Park.
