They appear to be functionally equivalent and each interacts with a variety of other proteins as well as eIF4E and eIF4A, including the poly(A)-binding protein, eIF3 (associated with the 40S ribosomal subunit) and an eIF4E-specific protein kinase termed Mnk-1 (Gingras et al., 1999).
