DAD

Susan Cane

Susan Cane is a photographer living in Bristol, England.

In September 1993, a few days after his 73rd birthday, my father suffered a stroke; in June 1998 he had a second stroke. The many consequences of this include paralysis of the right side of his body, loss of the ability to speak or to swallow liquids, and difficulty in understanding.

The dedication of my mother enables him to continue living at home in Bristol. She is there for him 24 hours a day, looking after all his day-to-day needs, with occasional help from other members of the family.

These photographs document my father’s everyday life. As a group, they also form a study of him as ‘my dad’. However, they also tell a great deal about the life of ‘my mum’.
