Dear Sir,

The letter of Carlos Carrere informing us of Procrearte’s recent ISO certification is appreciated and is to be congratulated. The amalgamation of 70 physicians into a network of ART is no small feat. It requires standardization so that all concerned are working from the ‘same page’.

One can only begin to work as a cohesive group when one understands what the other is doing. Documentation and protocol realization form the bases for ISO certification—the so-called ‘Say what you do, and do what you say’.

Our IVF Center (Boston IVF) is the largest IVF centre in the United States. Much to the credit of my European colleagues, we have also begun the process of ISO certification and hope to be completed very soon.

We support the Dr Carrere’s proposal that ISO standards be considered as an international standard for IVF Centres. It is better for a standard to be self-imposed rather than to have some standard be devised and dictated by a governmental authority. Wouldn’t it be nice for IVF centres around the globe to lead the entire medical community to be the first specialty to set a worldwide standard for its field? The opportunity is now.
