Dr Basil Tarlatzis

Chairman ESHRE (1997-1999)

Dr Basil Tarlatzis was born in Athens in 1950. He graduated from the School of Medicine of the National University of Athens in 1974. He trained in obstetrics and gynaecology at the Aristotelian University of Thessaloniki from 1997–1980, where he also obtained his doctoral degree. He undertook postdoctoral training in London, Groningen and Detroit. Between 1982 and 1985, he was a postdoctoral fellow at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of Yale University School of Medicine in New Haven (CT). From 1986 onwards Dr Tarlatzis has been affiliated to the 1st Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki as a senior lecturer, assistant professor and currently associate professor. He is also the director of the IVF Centre `Geniki Kliniki' in Thessaloniki. He has published more than 300 papers in international and national journals as well as 10 chapters in books. He has lectured at many national and international congresses. He was a member of many organizing and scientific committees or congresses. He is a member of the editorial board of 9 international and 5 national Greek scientific publications, and a member of 14 international and 18 national scientific societies.

Even before ESHRE's `conception' as a Scientific Society Dr Tarlatzis had a keen interest in ESHRE. Whilst still at Yale in 1985, he telephoned Professor Edwards in Cambridge and informed him that he was very interested in participating in ESHRE, at a time when that Society was still organizing its first activities! He participated in ESHRE's congresses, and organized in Thessaloniki several ESHRE Campus Workshops as well as the IXth Annual Meeting. He has served in several capacities for the Society, as a member of the advisory committee, member of the executive committee (1991–1995) chairman elect (1995–1997) and chairman (1997–1999). He is also the Editor of ESHRE's Newsletter `Focus on Reproduction'. He also served as an active member of many ESHRE committees such as the Ethics Committee, and the ICSI Task Force.

Throughout the years Dr. Tarlatzis has contributed greatly to the growth of the Society and its many activities. He has been appreciated by all his colleagues for his great human qualities, his wisdom, his gentle approach and his great negotiating talent. Throughout all the years since its inception, he has demonstrated total loyalty to ESHRE and its members, and his benign and stimulating influence has been immensely appreciated since the Society began.
