Solid tumors in patients treated for Hodgkin's disease

We read with interest the article by Behringer et al. published in Annals of Oncology. They retrospectively analyzed patients with Hodgkin's disease for secondary solid tumors following treatment of Hodgkin's disease. They reported that lung cancer (23.6%) and colorectal cancer (20.5%) were the most common solid tumors in long-term survivors after the treatment of Hodgkin's disease [1Go].

Smoking and alcohol consumption are risk factors for the development of many solid tumors such as lung, larynx, pharynx, oral cavity, colon, esophagus, kidney, pancreas, breast and cervix cancer [2Go–4Go]. Smoking- and alcohol-related cancers constitute approximately 63% of secondary cancers reported in Behringer et al.'s study, but the prevalence of smoking and alcohol consumption was not reported in that study. To make a firm conclusion, the study population should have been analyzed according to the risk factors in the development of solid tumors.
