About Epidemiologic Reviews

Moyses Szklo

Editor-in-Chief, American Journal of Epidemiology

Epidemiologic Reviews is now in its 25th year of publication. The Reviews began as an annual compilation of review articles, intended to complement the research articles published in the American Journal of Epidemiology. Over time, Epidemiologic Reviews moved from an annual to a biannual publication and, over the last decade, one of the issues has been directed toward a particular topic, providing a state-of-the-art synthesis.

Reflecting continuing currents of change in our field, Epidemiologic Reviews will return to being an annual publication, keeping the topic-oriented issue and eliminating the issue that publishes unsolicited reviews. This change follows a declining number of submissions, perhaps reflecting the complexity of carrying out reviews in a systematic fashion. Additionally, as epidemiologic research has become more focused, an issue dealing with review articles in very diverse areas may have become of less interest to a general audience. As it did prior to the creation of Epidemiologic Reviews, the American Journal of Epidemiology will again consider publication of review articles that are appropriate for its wide readership.

There has also been a change in the Editor-in-Chief of Epidemiologic Reviews. Dr. Haroutune Armenian, who served in this role for 14 years, leading the development of the thematic issues and maintaining the highest quality in the articles, has decided to step down to devote more time to his many other professional endeavors. Dr. Michel Ibrahim, the former Dean of the University of North Carolina School of Public Health who is now a faculty member at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, is the new (interim) Editor-in-Chief. Dr. Ibrahim welcomes proposals for future issues of Epidemiologic Reviews.
